YIR: Stephens County Schools in 2021

As WNEG News continues its look back at 2021, today we’ll review the past 12-months for Stephens County Schools.

The year began with students attending virtual classes due to the Coronavirus; however, at the start of 2021-2022 school year, in August, students were able to return to the classroom in-person.

The school system hired Dr. Matthew Thompson as the system’s Deputy Superintendent.

The Board of Education filled the position left vacant on the school board by Bill Wheeler with Travis Dobbs.

Chairman Jim Bellamy announced the Board’s decision selecting Dobbs.

Then, at the start of the current academic year, the Stephens County Board of Education announced that the school system would be reassign Stephens County School Superintendent Dr. Daniel Oldham, stating they wanted to move in a different direction. Oldham was then reassigned from Superintendent to Transitional Coordinator.

Following Oldham’s reassignment, Thompson filled in temporarily, until the Board of Education named former School Superintendent Bryan Dorsey as the Interim Superintendent.

Then in December, the Board of Education announced that Dr. Constance Franklin was the sole finalist for the Stephens County School Superintendent. During the December 13th meeting, Bellamy recommended Franklin as the sole finalist.

Prior to hiring Franklin officially, the Board must wait the state required 14-day waiting period for public comment.

This week, the Board of Education scheduled a Special Called Meeting for January 4, to officially hire Franklin as Stephens County Superintendent.

This past year, the School System approved a proposal from Deluxe Athletics to complete the Stephens County High School Football Field and Track Conversion. Stephens County High School also opened its newly renovated CTAE Wing earlier this year.

WNEG News will continue its look back at 2021 later this week.
