Winter Weather Preparedness Week – Day 4

Just a reminder that this week is Winter Weather Preparedness Week, and as WNEG News reported last week, Danielle Rhodes, Director of Stephens County Emergency Management, is joining The National Weather Service and the Ready Georgia campaign in offering plans and education on potentially dangerous storms and encouraging residents to prepare for severe winter weather.

Each day during Winter Weather Preparedness Week focuses on a different aspect of winter weather, and today’s highlight is Winter Weather Driving Tips/Safety. Officials advise to always stay off the roads whenever possible during extreme winter weather conditions, and recommend packing a mobile Ready Kit in advance. If driving during winter weather events is necessary, they give the following advice:

  • Maintain at least a half tank of gas during the winter season.
  • Keep an extra Ready kit in the trunk of your car. In addition to the basic essentials covered earlier this week in your home ready kit, consider adding a portable cell phone charger, ice scraper, extra blanket, sand for traction and jumper cables.
  • Follow directions from local officials about driving during snow and ice storms, and drive with caution.
  • SLOW DOWN to at least half your normal speed and use a low gear as you drive.
