Wilkinson, Erwin to Address Pre-Legislative Coffee Thursday

Newly elected State House Representative for District 28 Chris Erwin will join State Senator John Wilkinson for a pre-legislative coffee in Toccoa this week.

Both Wilkinson and Erwin will discuss some of the larger issues facing the Georgia General Assembly when the session opens January 14.

In addition to adopting a new budget for fiscal 2020, law makers will hear from new Governor Brian Kemp who is expected to address them in the first week to outline his agenda.

Other issues expected to be brought up this session include how to keep students safer in schools.

Kemp is reportedly planning to push for more mental health counselors in schools and increase funding for mental health.

Wilkinson serves on the State Senate’s Youth and Education Committee.

That committee is reportedly preparing to recommend longer summer breaks with academic years starting no earlier than 10 days before Labor Day.

And lawmakers could decide this session whether to allow medical marijuana to be grown in Georgia.

The pre-legislative coffee takes place Thursday morning at 8a in the Mitchell Allen Meeting Room.
