Vets Haven to Build Transitional Homes for Homeless Veterans

Vets Haven, a local non-profit organization that helps veterans, is planning to build 8 long-term transitional homes for homeless veterans.

According to Chairman of Vets Haven, Patrick Mcnulty, they’ve received a donation of land from local business owner Alden Parker.

On that acre of land, they plan to build 8 homes, six of them 1 bedroom, 1 bath homes and two 2 bed, 2 bath homes, all with kitchen, dining and living areas. They will also have a fenced in backyard for pets, front porches, washing machines as well as cable and internet. Additionally, they are hoping to have a transportation service.

There will be no charge upfront for the veterans, but Mcnulty said they hope to have them helping around the community.

“Up front, there’s no cost to the veteran, however, what we’d like to do is have the veterans help the community,” said Mcnulty. “Community service work, do little projects, sell goods and that money they raise will go back into Vets Haven.”

Mcnulty said they don’t have a groundbreaking date for these homes just yet as they are still trying to raise money.

One way they’re doing that is through a motorcycle and vehicle ride as a fundraiser on July 29.

The ride will begin at Bridge Church in Cleveland and end at Doyle Street Park. There will also be raffle tickets available for a $150 dollar mega motorsports gift card, a grill donated by Tugalo gas and two handcrafted end tables from Southern Craftsmen Wood.

Mcnulty said building these homes is important because veterans sometimes have difficulty adjusting to civilian lifestyles after serving in the military.

“A veteran that comes back and has combat stress related injuries or is disabled, it’s just going to be harder for them,” said Mcnulty. “It’s just going to be harder for them and that’s why it’s important. Veterans deserve it. They need to have somewhere to call home instead of living on the street. Most of them that are living on the street, a lot of it’s due to combat stress related injuries. Not being able to associate with civilian workforce and people not understanding.”
