Verdict: Guilty on both charges

R-L Webb, who is in his mid 60s, has been sentenced to 45 years in prison–after an Oconee jury returned verdicts of guilty.

In all, the jury deliberated about nine hours over two days before finding Webb guilty of murder and burglary first degree.

Greg Brock was shot dead in September 2016 at his trailer home near Westminster, after being roused from sleep.

In a trial that ran through last week, the jury heard testimony indicating that the theft of a toolbox was the motive in the shooting death.

Webb did not testify at trial, but the jury got to see and hear a video of a jailhouse interview that followed his arrest at a Lavonia, Georgia motel.

At sentencing, Webb chose to make no comment.

Brock’s mother, Margaret, and daughter Morgan spoke in the courtroom after the verdicts were announced and said they were glad to be able to get justice.

Blair Stoudemire, assistant solicitor, said that quote “regardless of the time that passed the jury’s decision, they had reached a verdict that ultimately spoke the truth.”

Judge McIntosh, before passing sentence, acknowledged Webb’s insistence that he was so drunk the night of the shooting that he remembered very little about what happened.

At sentencing, McIntosh rejected the loss of memory excuse, saying that after the fatal shooting Webb hid in a kudzu patch not far from investigating officers and he later made his way to a Lavonia, Georgia service station, from which the prosecution believes he was attempting to catch a ride to Texas.
