Two International Fugitives captured in Lavonia after 14 year run

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) apprehended two Mexican nationals who had been wanted for crimes in Mexico for 14 years.

Franklin County Sheriff Steve Thomas tells WNEG News about the recent arrest.

According to Thomas, in October of 2004, 43-year-old Arminda Espinoza-Albarran and 41-year-old Jose Mendez-Paniagua had warrants taken out for their arrest, charging them with kidnapping and attempted murder.

He adds that in April of 2014, INTERPOL issued an International Red Notice charging Espinoza with kidnapping.

After 14 years, the search has finally ended with the two being captured in Franklin County.

Thomas said the arrest took place Tuesday morning.

The arrest took place on Tuesday morning, and required the assistance of the ICE Atlanta Field Office and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Deputies.

Law Enforcement were able to apprehend both suspects without incident.

Both men will remain in ICE custody awaiting a hearing from an immigration judge.

Thomas adds that without the cooperation of federal agents and local law enforcement officials the arrest would not have been possible.

Thomas did not say where the two suspected kidnappers were being held by ICE.
