There are two U. S. Forest Service prescribed burns planned in Stephens County today in the vicinity of Currahee Mountain.  The first burn will be 229 acres at Davis Mountain along Hwy. 365/17.  The second burn is 786 acres in the Lake Russell Wildlife Management Area along Currahee Mountain Road and Guard Camp Roads.

Both burns will be ignited with helicopter ignitions as well as ground resources, and while forecasted conditions are favorable for smoke dispersion, motorists are advised to heed traffic signs and use caution along Highway 365/17.  Ignitions will begin around 10 a.m. and conclude around 4 p.m.

The burns are being conducted to reduce hazardous fuels in the wildland urban interface as well as improve habitat for wildlife.
