Tugalo Street Greenspace construction to begin Dec. 11

Construction on the Tugalo Street Greenspace is about to get underway, with demolition work beginning on Dec. 11, and Main Street Toccoa officials have advised area businesses that the parking lot will be closed for demolition and construction purposes until further notice.

Alternative parking areas recommended by Main Street include the parking spots along Sage Street, Pond Street, and in the parking lot behind Linda’s Place at the Rebel Cafe, accessible from Doyle Street by a breezeway.

As reported earlier by WNEG News, the city was awarded $689,042 from the Georgia Department of Community Affairs through a Rural Downtown Redevelopment Grant for the purpose of constructing a greenspace in downtown Toccoa.  The grant stipulated that the city must provide $68,904 in matching funds for the grant. The design fees (for the project) have been paid, and the city has received reimbursement from DCA for the Architectural, engineering and survey fees. Thus there is $661,326 budgeted for (the remainder) of the project.”

Three bids for the construction were received, including a bid from Ward-Humphrey, Inc. of Marietta for $1,123,000; Triscapes Inc. of Cumming for $896,850.35, and Vertical Earth, Inc., for $997,888.

The City Commission approved the Triscapes bid, which was above the budgeted grant and matching funds allocated for the project by $235,524, with the stipulation that city staff would work with Triscapes to adjust the scope of the project to bring the project in at budget, and at last week’s city commission meeting, Commissioner Terry Carter announced that there had been progress on that goal.
