TPD apprehend 2 Toccoa men for DUI

Two Toccoa men have been arrested after each went through a safety checkpoint while driving under the influence.

Officers with the Toccoa Police Department held the safety checkpoint, on Aug. 27, at the Intersection of Pond Street and Collins Road.

According to Toccoa Police Chief Jimmy Mize, Shannon Thompson, 50, of Toccoa, pulled up to the road check, where officers attempted to complete standardized field sobriety tests; however, based on the tests given, it was evident that he was driving under the influence of a stimulant.

Thompson was taken to the Stephens County Hospital for consented blood tests.

He was found to have in his possession, two baggies with a substance believed to be methamphetamine.

Thompson was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of drugs and possession of methamphetamine, and was transported to the Stephens County Jail to be processed.

In a separate case, Officers with the Toccoa Police Department were participating in another safety checkpoint, this time on Hwy 106, at Casey Pro Tire.

Vernard Durham, 49, of Toccoa, had an expired license, was found to be under the influence of multiple substances and in possession of Crack Cocaine.

Durham was issued a citation from Superior Court for DUI-Multiple Substances, refusal and a warrant was taken for possession of crack cocaine.

He was then transported to the Stephens County Jail without incident.
