Town of Martin announces first qualifiers

During the second day of candidate qualifying yesterday, Martin City Clerk Sonya Stovall notified WNEG News that two candidates qualified for the upcoming general election.

Harold Alexander, who currently serves as a council member, qualified to run for the Mayor’s seat. 

Incumbent council member Mark Gearhart qualified to run for re-election to the Town Council.

The Martin general election will include two council member seats and the mayor position.

Qualifying for the Martin general election will continue today through 4 p.m. at Town Hall, located at 3707 Historic Highway 17 in Martin. 

The qualifying fee for a council seat is $90 per candidate, while the qualifying fee for mayor is $144.

Qualifying for both of the City of Toccoa’s elections will also come to a close today.

One election is a special election to fill the vacant commission seat left by the death of commissioner Janette Jamieson. The second election is a general election for city commissioners. 

Seats up for election are Post 1, which is currently held by Terry Carter, Post 2, which is currently held by David Austin, and Post 4, which is currently held by Gail Fry.

The candidate qualifying fee is $330 per position. Qualifying for both city elections takes place at Toccoa City Hall.
