Today is Election Day for Presidential Primary

Today is Election Day for the Georgia Presidential Preference Primary.

All voting will take place at the Historic Courthouse, 37 West Tugalo Street in downtown Toccoa. Polls will open at 7 a.m. and will remain open until 7 p.m. Streetside parking is available downtown, with reserved handicap and elderly parking on Sage Street from Doyle Street to Tugalo Street. Parking is also available in the parking lot across Tugalo Street from the entrance to the Historic Courthouse, as well as the lower parking lot behind the Tugalo Street Parking area and adjacent to the Public Library parking lot. In addition, barriers to the parking area at the Tugaloo Street Greenspace construction area closest to the Historic Courthouse have been removed, opening that parking area to election parking. Also, if needed, shuttle service will be available throughout the day from the parking area next to the former Tabor Motors building on Pond Street at E. Currahee Street, and from the parking lot at the Chamber of Commerce, on North Alexander Street at Foreacre Street, and the adjacent parking lot across Doyle Street from the Ritz Theatre. For assistance, contact Stephens County Election Supervisor Bruce Carlisle, who has supplied his cell phone number for immediate access throughout the day for this purpose: He can be reached at (706) 371-6770.

The only item on the ballot for this election is the United States Presidential selection by party. Voters will select whether to vote on selecting the Republican candidate for President, or the Democratic candidate for President. A voter’s selection of a party’s ballot in the Presidential Preference Primary does not bind their vote to that candidate, or that party ballot, in the general election in November.

No other item will be on the ballot in today’s election. Local races, including County Commissioner posts and the Stephens County Sheriff’s race, are not under consideration in today’s election. The General Primary and Nonpartisan Election Day for local and state races will be May 21, with advance voting beginning April 29.

As reported by WNEG News in previous broadcasts, the Stephens County Board of Elections met last night for a called meeting to begin processing absentee ballots for the Presidential Preference Primary. Board members opened the outer envelope of the approximately 185 absentee ballots that have been returned to the election office so far, preparing the ballots for tabulation this evening. The inner ballots remained unopened and will be tabulated with the rest of the ballots this evening.

Tabulation of Advance, In-Person voting ballots, absentee ballots and Election Day ballots will take place immediately following the close of polls tonight at 7 p.m. WNEG News will be on hand for the tabulation process and will report the results on wnegradio.com and our social media account as soon as they become available.
