Toccoa woman faces charges after accident fatally injures Martin woman in Stephens County

Charges are pending for a Toccoa woman after a car accident fatally injured a Martin woman Monday in Stephens County.

According to Troopers with the Georgia State Patrol, 48-year-old Lisa Wertz, was fatally injured when the car she was a passenger in was struck multiple times.

The accident occurred Monday, December 7, on GA-17 at Whispering Pines Road around 6:24 p.m.

Toccoa resident Kathy Loggins was driving a gray Kia Forte south on Highway 17 when she failed to yield while turning left, when a Honda Pilot driven by Kyle Weir, of Lavonia, struck the side of the Kia as it crossed the northbound travel lane.

The resulting impact left the gray sedan in the roadway without any lighting.

According to GSP, a secondary collision then occurred when a gray Toyota 4Runner driven by Holly Black, of Toccoa, struck the damaged and unlit vehicle in the roadway head-on.

A blue Chevrolet Tahoe was struck following the secondary collision by the gray sedan after being hit by the 4Runner.

The driver of the Tahoe, Jeff Dover, of Toccoa, was uninjured in the crash.

Two Anderson Lifeflight units were dispatched to the scene to transport the most seriously injured.

Loggins was transported to Greenville for treatment and Wertz was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center for her injuries.

Wertz succumb to her injuries around 7:35 p.m.

At this time, Loggins is in serious condition in ICU at Greenville.

Weir was not seriously injured in the accident. Black suffered minor injuries and was treated at Habersham County Medical Center.
