Toccoa woman arrested for DUI following roll over wreck

A Toccoa woman was arrested following a recent roll over wreck.

According to Toccoa Police Chief Jimmy Mize, on June 4, at approximately 3:30 a.m., officers were dispatched to Collins Road in reference to a motor vehicle collision with unknown injuries.

The vehicle in question had rolled over onto its side and was at rest in the Walgreen’s water runoff.

Mize says the vehicle appeared to have left the roadway at the Dollar General sign, knocked down the Collins Road Baptist Church mailbox and a roadside curve sign and travelled straight into a large hardwood tree at the edge of the Church parking lot before travelling through two fences and coming to rest in a third fence against a retaining wall.

Officers made their way over the third fence and attempted to help the driver out of the car.

According to Mize, the driver was bleeding from multiple locations and was wild eyed.

He adds that she would not listen to any directions, and at one point, panicked and wanted to know where her daughter was.

Fearing a child might have been ejected, additional personnel were brought in to search the area; however, no one else was located.

The driver was identified as Deanna Lynn Kelly.

As EMS and Fire attempted to pull her from the car she continued to kick, scream and attempted to bite paramedics. She appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance.

As a precaution for the safety of the EMTs, Mize says, officers checked her person for weapons. As they pulled her pockets inside out, a small baggie with a white substance and a knife were obtained.

Mize says the owners of the vehicle arrived on scene and advised that Kelly did not have permission to be driving their car. Upon arrival at the hospital, Mize says officers read her the implied consent notice and asked for a blood sample which she refused.

The white powder-substance field tested as Amphetamine (Ecstasy)

Deanna Lynn Kelly, 57, of Toccoa was charged with DUI, failure to maintain lane, theft by taking of a motor vehicle and possession of amphetamines.
