Toccoa-Stephens County Humane Shelter Receives Grant to Help Dogs Find Homes

The Toccoa-Stephens County Humane Shelter is the recipient of a special grant designed to help find homes for some of its long-term residents.

Shelter Executive Director Jeff Roberts says the shelter will use the money to pay the adoption fees for dogs who have been at the shelter for a long time.

“We received $2,000 from the Petfinder Foundation to help expedite the adoptions for some of our longer term dogs who have been at the shelter,” Roberts explained. “We’re basically waiving the adoption fee for 20 dogs who have been at the shelter the longest. We have them fill out the normal adoption application and the do a meet and greet with the dog and if it’s a good match then they can adopt the dog at no cost for these 20 dogs.”

Roberts said the 20 dogs available for free adoption have been at the shelter on Scenic Drive for up to four months.

Roberts says the dogs are mostly mixed breeds, but are highly adoptable and just need to find the right family to take them to their forever home.

“Most of them are fairly young. It’s really mixes of labs, some are pit bull mixes. A number of the dogs were brought in heartworm positive, and we have had funds donated. So, we have been treating them for heartworms and that medicine will go home with the adoptor,” Roberts said.

According to their Web site, the Petfinder Foundation supports shelters and rescue groups that post their adoptable pets on Petfinder.com.

Their mission is to prevent the euthanasia of adoptable pets by providing cash and product grants to shelters so that homeless pets can be physically and mentally healthy and, ultimately, find loving forever homes.
