Toccoa set to mark Arbor Day with tree planting today
Toccoa Main Street will celebrate Arbor Day today in downtown Toccoa.
Arbor Day was last Friday; however, due to inclement weather, the tree planting ceremony was moved to today.
Main Street Toccoa’s Events Coordinator Sharon Crosby says the city will plant a white oak and two dogwood trees on the courthouse lawn this afternoon.
Crosby says for 14 years, the City of Toccoa has been recognized as a Tree City USA.
According to the Arbor Day Foundation, in order to become a Tree City USA, a municipality must adhere to certain guidelines.
Those include, creating a Tree Board Department, pass a Tree Care ordinance, develop a Community Forestry Program with an annual budget of at least $2 per capita, and have an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
Again, the Arbor Day tree planting ceremony will begin today at 2 p.m. on the Courthouse lawn.
The public is invited to attend.
