Toccoa rainfall puts 2024 in the top 3 rainiest Januaries

With less than 72 hours left in the month, January 2024 is on track to be the third wettest January in Toccoa’s recorded history.

National Weather Service records show that 1915 was the wettest January in Toccoa, when 15.52 inches of rain was recorded during the month. 1936 had a reported 13.3” of rain in January, there was 10.64 inches of precipitation in January of 1947, and 1982 saw rainfall of 10.61 inches in the first month of the year.   

As of this morning at 6 a.m., 12.32 inches of rain have fallen in Toccoa since the beginning of the new year, with 1.88” of that falling over this past weekend.

According to National Weather Service Meteorologist Chris Horne, the “normal” rainfall for January in Toccoa is  4.67 inches.

The rainiest month in recorded history was September of 2009, when a total of 22.02” fell in Toccoa – a fact that played a part in 2009 being the rainiest year in recorded history in Toccoa, with a total rainfall for the year of 85.85 inches. The record low annual rainfall in the city was 35.95 inches in 2016, while the mean rainfall in Toccoa is 59.49 inches. 

Looking at the forecast for the last few days of January, the chance of further precipitation appears low, with clear skies today, tonight and tomorrow, and only a 30 percent chance of showers Tuesday night, and sunshine and clear skies forecast for the last day of the month on Wednesday.
