Toccoa Mayor takes short-term medical leave

Toccoa Mayor Terry Carter is taking a short-term medical leave.

During the Toccoa City Commission meeting, Vice-Mayor Evan Hellenga read a letter from Carter asking the commission to accept his request for a short-term medical leave while he undergoes cancer treatment at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida.

In the letter, Carter says the intense treatment doesn’t allow him time to fulfill his duties as mayor and city commissioner at this time.

Hellenga read the letter to the commission.

Commissioner Jeanette Jamieson said that Carter should not return his pay to the city.

The other commissioners agreed.

A motion accepting Carter’s request for a short-term medical leave was made by Jamieson with Commissioner Gail Fry seconding the motion.

The motion was approved 4-0 with Carter being absent.
