A Toccoa man is behind bars after deputies with the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office found him driving a lawn mower while under the influence.

According to Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley, the incident occurred on May 4, around 1:00 a.m. when a deputy performed a traffic stop on the lawn mower at the intersection of Midget Drive and Georgia Hwy 106.

Shirley says Stephens County E-911 received reports that the lawn mower had been driving erratically up and down Elberton Street, while the driver appeared to be under the influence of some type of drugs.

The driver was identified as 35-year-old Toccoa resident David Wilhite.

Shirley says Corporal Kylar Jameson believed Wilhite was under the influence of some type of stimulant, after witnessing him pacing back and forth, speaking in a fast manner, and at times, talking to himself.

After a series of sobriety testing, Wilhite was placed under arrest for driving under the influence as well as registration and license requirements for operating the lawn mower on a public roadway.

While searching the lawn mower, deputies located a substance believed to be methamphetamine along with a glass pipe used for smoking narcotics.

David Wilhite was transported to Stephens County Jail and is currently incarcerated with a $7,500 bond for Driving under the influence, possession of methamphetamine, driving without a license, vehicle registration and license requirements, operation of an unsafe vehicle, and possession of drug related objects.
