Toccoa man arrested by SCSO following traffic stop

The Stephens County Sheriff’s Office recently arrested a Toccoa man following a traffic stop.

According to Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley, on August 22, a deputy with his office was on a routine patrol when he noticed a red Chrysler PT Cruiser traveling on Georgia Highway 365 with no tag lights.

The deputy then initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle where it pulled over on Georgia Highway 365 and Rock Quarry Road.

Shirley says, as the deputy was speaking with the driver of the vehicle, he asked the driver if there were any weapons inside the vehicle.

The driver stated that there were not, however as the deputy waited for the driver to furnish his license, he noticed a Glock handgun in the door of the vehicle.

The deputy then asked the driver to step out of the vehicle for safety reasons after the driver was not truthful about the handgun.

The handgun was then secured so that the deputy could finish the traffic stop.

According to Shirley, the driver then granted consent for the deputy to search the vehicle where a small amount of marijuana was found inside the vehicle.

After a check of the driver was conducted, it was determined that the driver, identified as Antonio Sebastian Mayfield was a convicted felon.

Mayfield was then placed under arrest and transported to the Stephens County Jail.

Antonio Mayfield, 39, of Toccoa was charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and Possession of Marijuana less than 1 oz, and Probation Violation.

Mayfield is currently incarcerated at the Stephens County Jail without bond.
