Toccoa man arrested after fleeing the scene of an accident

A Toccoa man has been arrested by the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office.

According to Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley, on July 16, at approximately 9:11 p.m., his office conducted a crash investigation where a subject fled on foot after the collision.

Shirley says his office responded to the area of Rock Creek Road after a passer-by drove up on a side-by-side, All-Terrain-Vehicle, that had crashed into the guard rail and overturned.

The collision was reported with injuries.

As emergency personnel were arriving on scene, the male subject, identified as 35-year-old Michael Christopher Worley, fled the scene into a wooded area nearby.

Witnesses stated that a male subject had fled on foot.

Deputies began setting up a perimeter and called for a Stephens County K-9 unit to assist in the search.

Once the K-9 unit arrived, they immediately began searching the area near South Red Rock Road where Worley was last seen.

The K-9 unit tracked the scent along the wood line to a shed where he found a beer can that matched a beer can that was located at the crash site. The K-9 unit continued tracking behind a residence.

Shirley says deputies were told by another witness who stated they saw the suspect with blood on him. Deputies then made contact with the occupants of the residence and observed a male with blood on him and injuries consistent with that of a collision. The male subject was then detained and identified as Worley.

Worley was being checked by Stephens County EMS and refused any further treatment.

The Georgia State Patrol conducted the vehicle crash investigation.
Worley was arrested and charged with failure to obey stop sign, obstructing or hindering law enforcement, hit and run, failure to report accident, failure to maintain lane, reckless driving, no proof of insurance, driving while license withdrawn, registration requirements, driving under the influence, and criminal trespass.

Worley has since been released from the Stephens County Jail.
