Toccoa man arrested after a fight broke out in a hotel parking lot

A Toccoa man has been arrested after a fight ensued in the parking lot of a hotel in Toccoa.

According to Toccoa Police Chief Jimmy Mize, on Saturday, his officers responded to the Quality Inn, located on Stephens Circle, in reference to a fight in progress.

Upon their arrival, James Byrd told officers that Roman Arthur and an unknown male had walked up to him in the parking lot and asked him for his “stuff.”

Byrd went on to tell officers, that the two men grabbed him and he began to try and fight them.

According to their report, Byrd told officers that the unknown man had ran off and Arthur attempted to run only to trip and fall giving Byrd the opportunity to jump him.

Then Arthur ran to a car and fled the scene.

Mize adds that as officers were interviewing Byrd, other officers were checking out his room.

Officers uncovered suspected marijuana, drug related objects, baggies and scissors were found.

James Merritt Byrd, 27, of Toccoa was arrested and charged with possession, manufacture, and distribution of a controlled substance and possession and use of drug related objects.
