Main Street Toccoa is the recipient of two awards from the Georgia Downtown Association.

Main Street Manager Christian Hamilton says the awards were presented at a recent GDA conference.

Marilyn Hall receives GDA award from Mayor David Austin

“We were presented two awards at Georgia Downtown Conference, which is hosted annually by the Georgia Downtown Association. One was for Board Member of the Year for Mr. and Mrs. Patrick and Marilyn Hall. The other was for Downtown Excellence in Promotions for our 2017 Totally Toccoa Downtown Solar Eclipse Celebration.”

At the start of the regular City Commission meeting Monday, Mayor David Austin presented Board Members Patrick and Marilyn Hall with their awards.

“Mrs. Hall serves on both the Downtown Development Authority and the Economic Construction Committee. Mr. Hall has recently finished a valuable term on the Historic Preservation Commission and as a couple, working together, they have dedicated themselves to downtown development. They both work diligently as volunteers and they do it all just because they love Toccoa,” noted Austin.

The second award went to Toccoa Main Street for Best Promotion of the Year for Totally Toccoa 2017 Eclipse Celebration.

Main Street Events Coordinator Sharon Crosby says it took a year to organize but was an exciting time.

“We started planning over a full year ahead of time because we had been told to expect big crowds,” she explained. “We had people from all over the world come. We had about 7,000 downtown and about 30,000 visitors in the County. So it was a great turnout and it was a lot of fun. It was like a great big party.”

Crosby said those who visited Toccoa for the eclipse noted how friendly people were during the event.

The Georgia Downtown Conference promotes downtown and economic development through public awareness, governmental relations, and education.
