Toccoa Main Street Receives 2017 Chairman’s Award for Excellence in Rehabiliatation

The City of Toccoa’s Main Street program is the recipient of yet another major award.

On Tuesday, Main Street officials announced they had received the 2017 Chairman’s Award for Excellence in Rehabilitation by the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation.

Main Street spokesperson Christian Hamilton said the award is related to the work done on the restored Ritz Theatre.

Hamilton said work began on what was once known as the Schaefer Center in 2012, and since then a number of significant improvements have been made.

So far, the City has spent about $400,000 to bring the Ritz back to its former glory, about half of that money came from federal grants.

Toccoa received the Award for Excellence in Rehabilitation at the 2017 Preservation Awards recently held in Gainesville.
