Toccoa Commission Meets Today
Toccoa City Commissioners will start off their year with their first regularly scheduled meeting later today.
City commissioners are set to meet at 5 p.m. today at Toccoa City Hall.
First on the city commission’s agenda for 2014 is the election of a mayor and vice-mayor for the upcoming calendar year.
City commissioners vote among themselves to choose a mayor and vice-mayor each year.
The city commission and mayor will also make a number of yearly appointments during today’s meeting and consider an appointment to the Toccoa Planning Commission to replace Evan Hellenga, who is now a city commissioner.
Toccoa Commissioners also have one item of “old business” to take on during their first meeting of 2014.
That is the abandonment of Savannah Lane and a portion of an alley adjacent to Savannah Lane that has been requested by the Toccoa First United Methodist Church.
Commissioners have tabled the proposed abandonment multiple times in light of opposition from some nearby residents, who say abandoning the road would eliminate secondary, emergency access to their properties.
When tabling it previously, commissioners asked the two sides to try and reach an agreement that worked for both sides.
Also during today’s meeting, city commissioners are scheduled to receive the monthly financial report and an update from the Stephens County Development Authority.
Today’s Toccoa City Commission meeting is open to the public.
