Toccoa Chamber of Commerce’s Town Hall meeting will be held Oct 2

Candidates who qualified to run for election in the upcoming municipal elections for the city of Toccoa and the Town of Martin have been invited to participate in a Town Hall  meeting, hosted by the Toccoa-Stephens County Chamber of Commerce.

The event will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, October 2 at the Historic Ritz Theatre, 166 West Doyle Street in Toccoa.

Citizens are invited to submit questions for the candidates. The deadline for submitting questions is September 25. Questions should be phrased in a manner which is applicable to any and all candidates in a specific race, and not be addressed or targeted at a specific candidate. Questions can be submitted here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/LF69ZZN.

An email sent to all candidates explained the format for the evening, stating, “You will each be given 2 minutes for your introduction, which should include why you are compelled and qualified to run for office. When you are called to the stage, you will give your introduction and then be asked a number of questions submitted by your local constituents. All candidates and their opponents will be asked the same questions. You will have up to two minutes to respond to each question.”

Candidates will not be given prior notification of the questions to be asked, nor will they be able to hear other candidates respond to the questions prior to their turn at the podium.

The City of Toccoa will hold a general election for three candidates while a special election will take place to fill the seat of Commissioner Jennette Jamieson who died in April.

The race for the unexpired City of Toccoa Commision seat of Jennette Jamieson will be contested by Michelle Jamieson and Gary Cortellino.

The Post 1 seat of Terry Carter is uncontested as he seeks re-election.

Post 2, now held by David Austin, will feature a contest between Billy Chism and Ron Matheson.

Incumbent Gail Fry will face Lenwood Cannon in Post 4.

Martin will be electing a new mayor with Harold Alexander running unopposed.

The seats for the Town of Martin Council will feature incumbent Mark Gearhart, Michael O-Barr, and Keith Merritt.

Harold Alexander is running unopposed for the Martin mayoral seat.
