Toccoa, Carnes Creek Fire Departments extinguish gas fire in Toccoa

Firefighters from the Toccoa Fire Department and Carnes Creek Fire Department responded to a gas fire last week.

According to Toccoa Assistant Fire Chief Frankie Deitz, last month firefighters attended a training for fighting flammable gas fires and on Thursday, they used that training to extinguish a fire.

He says on Thursday, April 14, just after 7 p.m. a vehicle being unloaded on South Pond Street, broke free, sideswiped a home and severed a natural gas line which erupted into flames.

Firefighters from the two departments responded and advanced hand lines to protect the home and electric service, which was already being damaged by the radiant heat.

Firefighters extinguished the fire and assisted the City of Toccoa Gas Employees with capping off the line.

Additionally, Deitz says firefighters installed smoke detectors in the home because none were present.

The American Red Cross was called to provide shelter for the residents for the night as the homes electrical service was damaged.

No injuries were reported.
