Toccoa, Carnes Creek, and Shiloh Firefighters respond to garage fire Sunday

Several fire departments responded to a fire over the weekend.

According to Toccoa Assistant Fire Chief Frankie Deitz, Toccoa, Carnes Creek, and Shiloh firefighters responded to a garage fire off of Meeks Street, near West Currahee Street, shortly after midnight Sunday morning.

Deitz says the building sustained heavy fire damage and was quickly extinguished with two hose lines.

No injuries were reported and there was no damage to neighboring property.

He adds that firefighters installed a smoke detector in a nearby residence that did not have one.

Working smoke detectors and closed bedroom doors greatly improve your chance of surviving a fire in your home.

Most house fires local firefighters respond to, according to Deitz, do not have a working smoke detector. He says free smoke detectors are available at the fire station for those who cannot afford one.

Deitz says the cause of the fire is under investigation.
