Three Toccoa Police Officers Assaulted After Responding to Domestic Dispute

Three Toccoa Police Officers were assaulted Monday evening after responding to a domestic dispute.

Police Chief Tim Jarrell reports that at 6:04 p.m. on Monday evening, officers were called to a residence on Avon Street due to reports of a domestic dispute. When the first officer arrived at the residence, he was invited into the home and found the house in disarray, including broken items and items strung throughout the house.

“The first officer on scene, Justin Parten, made contact with a male by the name of Christopher Hansen,” said Jarrell. “When the officer was attempting to speak with Mr. Hansen to determine what had taken place, Hansen turned to walk away and then turned back and struck Officer Parten in the mouth with his fist.”

Jarrell said that Officer Parten and Hansen went to the ground and at that point, it took three officers to assist in getting Hansen under control. A taser was then used to get Hansen in handcuffs.

Even after being handcuffed, Jarrell said Hansen continued to be out of control.

“Hansen was escorted to the back of a Toccoa Police Department patrol vehicle to wait for EMS to arrive and at that point, he kicked out the back window of a patrol car,” said Jarrell. “In doing so, two other officers received injuries from the broken glass and the struggle that followed. Some of the officers got cut in trying to gain compliance to get him under control and another officer wound up with pieces of glass fragments in his eyes. Hansen was transported to Stephens County Jail where he is charged with criminal trespass under the Family Violence Act, cruelty to children in the third degree, three counts of battery on law enforcement officer, two counts of interference with government property, two counts of felony obstruction and one count of misdemeanor obstruction.”

The officers were treated last night at Med Access and returned to duty after being cleared that same night.

Jarrell said they suffered minor injuries, including abrasions and scratches.

According to Jarrell, they do suspect that Hansen was under the influence of some kind of narcotic.

The patrol car that was damaged is expected to be out of use for a day or two, according to Jarrell.
