TCC signs letter of support for potential low-income housing

Developers are looking to build housing units on East Doyle Street Extension.

Developers with Vantage Development recently sat down with the Toccoa City Commission to request a letter of support regarding the development of 64 town-house units to be located on East Doyle Street Extension.

Project Manager Jordan Whiteside provided the commissioners with a briefing of Vantage Development’s plans for Toccoa.

“Our units will be comprised of one, two and three bedroom, and prices range from $450 to $750. I looked at the city’s tax calculator, and this is estimated to be a $10-million deal, which would result in us paying the city around $98,000 in property taxes each year,” she said.

Commissioner Jeanette Jamieson asked Whiteside, because the units are income-based, if they would be assisted living or section 8 housing.

Whiteside explained that the units do accept section 8 vouchers; however, Vantage Development does not apply for or issue vouchers.

During this week’s City Commission meeting, the commissioners voted an approved to submit a letter of support for Vantage Development to seek funding for the future housing units.

City Manager Billy Morse recommended the commissioners submit its letter of support.

According to Whiteside, if everything goes as plan and funding is secured, then construction would begin in June 2019.

Commissioner Terry Carter made a motion to move forward with issuing the letter of support; Vice Mayor Gail Fry followed Carter’s motion with a second.

The motion passed.
