TCC grants variance for double panel billboard

The Toccoa City Commission met Friday to consider a revised variance request from Fairway Advertising for a billboard on the 17 Bypass.

The original request to erect a 672 square foot sign for Mike Jones Ford was presented, last month, to the city commissioners; however, it was rejected after the board said the proposed sign was too large and violated the City’s sign ordinance.

But, during Friday’s meeting, Fairway Advertising presented the board with plans to construct a 378 square foot double panel billboard.

According to City Manager Billy Morse the sign proposal has been reduced.

“Fairway Advertising has submitted a second billboard request. It is a reduced size from the original request. Basically, it consists of signage that is 10.5 ft tall and two signs of 18 ft wide,” he said.

Though smaller, the new billboard was still slightly over the City’s sign ordinance limit of 160 square feet per panel and required the City to approve a variance.

The board of commissioners voted and approved the request unanimously.

WNEG News spoke to Mike Jones, owner of Mike Jones Ford following the commissioner’s decision. He says that this will make his business and the several other businesses near the lot, be more attractive.

“We really just appreciate the city’s support. It was the right thing to do,” Jones said.
