Suspicious package found in Downtown Toccoa Friday night

Officials blocked off Doyle Street in Downtown Toccoa for approximately 90 minutes between 5 and 7 p.m. Friday night when what was described as a “suspicious package” was discovered.

The Toccoa Police and Fire Departments were quickly on the scene and the GBI Bomb squad was called in.

“The Special Agent with the GBI was able to inspect the suspicious package and was able to determine it was safe,” said Toccoa Police Chief Tim Jarrell. “He was able to open it and inside we found a stack of music CD’s in cases. From what we have been able to determine it was surprise gift left for someone Downtown and did not reach the intended recipient.”

Jarrell said, especially in these times, that you can’t be too careful.

“We would much rather err on the side of caution to keep the public safe than not.”

The Toccoa Police Department opened Doyle Street and Downtown Toccoa back for business and traffic around 6:45 p.m.
