Stephens Sweeps Basketball Doubleheader at Oconee Co.

Stephens County picks up a pair of varsity basketball wins in Watkinsville.

Tuesday night, both the Indians and Lady Indians went to Oconee County and won their respective Region 8-AAAA basketball games.

First in the girls’ game, Tynajiah “Na Na” Eades hit a free throw with 2.7 seconds left to give the Lady Indians a 36-35 win over the Oconee County Lady Warriors.

Anaiah Wilson led the Lady Indians with nine points and Eades added seven points.

Sara English led Oconee County with 14 points and Kaitlin Corral added 10 points.

The win moves the Lady Indians to 11-11 overall and 3-4 in region play, while the Lady Warriors fall to 9-12 overall and 0-7 in the region.

Moving to the boys’ game, Stephens County trailed in the opening minutes.

However, a five-man bench lineup of Rueben Walker, Brandon Wheeler, Charles Cochran, Ty Scott, and Paul Bellamy scored nine straight points and the Indians never looked back, leading by as many as 35 points on the way to a 59-35 win over the Warriors.

Ty Nails scored 15 points, all in the third quarter, to lead the Indians, while De’Undra Singleton scored 10 points and Walker added nine.

Rahul Das led Oconee County with 11 points.

The win moves the Indians to 15-7 overall and 3-4 in the region, while the Warriors fall to 16-5 overall and 4-3 in the region.

In JV boys, the Indians beat Oconee 57-44.

Stephens County’s boys’ and girls’ basketball teams return home Friday night to host Madison County in another region game. The girls’ game starts at 7 p.m. with the boys’ game to follow. Air time on WNEG and wnegradio.com is set for 6:45 p.m.
