Stephens County’s Malek Takes State Title

For the first time since 1970, Stephens County High School has a state wrestling champion.

Athena Malek won the state in girls weight class 102 last weekend in Macon. She is the first girl to win in that division. In girls wrestling, there are no class divisions, so she competed against all schools in Georgia.

State Female Traditional Champion
1st Place – Athena Malek of Stephens County
2nd Place – Carolina Chavarria of Warner Robins
3rd Place – Lisa Glymph of Marietta
4th Place – Lia Grace of Alexander
5th Place – Gaby Galvez of Chestatee
6th Place – Alanna Washington of Hiram

Other Indians competing at the state tournament were Tyler Wright, Tray Blackwell, Mason Norton, and Nathan Walker, who was an area champion.

Stephens County finished the season with a duals record of 18-10 and third in the area for the second year in a row.

Indians wrestling coach Matt Miller tells WNEG the 3rd place finish was a good accomplishment since most of the varsity team was made up of mostly freshmen and sophomores.
