For the first time in a decade, Stephens County Youth compete at the district level in basketball.

According to Stephens County Recreation Department Director Joe Smith, Stephens County fielded 6 basketball All-Star Teams that competed this past weekend in district tournaments.

The teams included 8U boys, 10U girls and boys, 12U boys and girls, and 14U boys.

Smith says he wanted to give the youth an opportunity to play basketball at the next level in recreation sports and having an All-Star team was the way to go.

During the three-day event, Stephens County also hosted the 10U boys’ tournament.

This gave the opportunity for the youth to play in front of a packed home crowd.

Smith says the road to victory was tough for Stephens County as they had to face off against Dawson, Elbert, Jackson and Barrow counties in the Championship game.

Stephens County 10U boys will now represent District 7 at the State Tournament in Carrolton, Georgia on March 4, at 7:15 p.m. against Coffee County.

Stephens County Parks and Recreation also had a runner-up in the district tournament.

The 12U Boys competed in Jackson County and had a hard-fought road to the championship game, where they took runner up against Barrow County.

Smith says his staff could not be more proud of the way all the teams handled themselves and played with good sportsmanship, adding the best is yet to come for the youth of Stephens County.
