Stephens County will hold August 11th Election recount today

The August 11th Primary Runoff election recount will be held today in Stephens County.

According to Stephens County Registrar Eureka Gober, the recount will begin at 11 a.m. on the second floor of the Historic Stephens County Courthouse.

As WNEG News told you recently, Republican Candidate for the 50th District State Senate Stacy Hall requested the recount after his challenger Republican Bo Hatchett won the election by just 37 votes.

Hall requested the recount officially on August 26, following the state’s certification of the vote, saying he would exercise his right to call for a recount after the results showed a difference in the vote count of just 37 votes.

Additionally, in Hall’s letter to Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, he writes quote: “I have heard a number of alarming reports on how absentee ballots were handled in Stephens County…I can confirm that many voters who requested absentee ballots never received them while others received absentee ballots as late as the Monday prior to the election making it impossible to meet the deadline,” end quote.

The Official Code of Georgia says if the difference between two candidates in a runoff is not more than one-half of 1 percent of the total votes cast, a candidate shall have the right to a recount of the votes cast. Such a request must be made in writing to the Secretary of State’s Office within two business days following the State’s Certification of the election.

Following the recount, a winner will be announced to face Democrat Dee Daley, of Rabun County, in the November General Election.
