Stephens County Teen, Grandfather killed in wreck on I-85

Toccoa businessman and father of Stephens County Commissioner Debbie Whitlock, J.V. Whitlock Jr., 76 and grandson Jarrett Whitlock, 18, were killed early this morning on interstate 85 outside of Spartanburg.

According to South Carolina Troopers, the crash happened around 1:30 a.m., right beneath the SC 290 overpass.

Troopers said a 2016 Dodge pickup hit a 2018 international tractor trailer from behind.

Both parties got out of their vehicles when another tractor trailer, a 2016 Freightliner, struck the pickup truck again.

The pickup then struck its driver and passenger.

The Freightliner also struck the driver of the other tractor trailer.

Troopers said the pickup truck’s driver and passenger both died at the scene.

The injured 52-year-old tractor trailer driver was taken to a nearby hospital.

As of yet, there is no update on the driver’s condition.

The driver of the Freightliner was not hurt.
