Stephens County Schools Closed for Students Sept. 10-11

Stephens County Schools will be closed for students on Thursday, September 10th, and Friday, September 11th.

The 20-day flexibility period for students to decide to be in school or virtual learning is scheduled to end on September 9th.

Stephens County School Superintendent Dr. Daniel Oldham says the non-scheduled off days for students were put in place for teachers and staff to prepare for students that are making the transition to in-school from virtual learning. “With the flexible period and what comes next, we know there are going to be situations where we are going to have to do some re-scheduling, shift some people, shift some resources based on decisions that will now become firm instead of flexible. Up until this time we have been doing our best to service everybody and spreading out all of the kids and who is supporting them which has been a heavy lift for the faculty and the schools. So trying to make the shift while you have kids on campus would be difficult.”

Oldham says this will be the best way to reset after the transition and for the remainder of the semester. “I approached the Board and said I really think after hearing some concerns from the teachers and how the 20 days have gone, I think it has gone well but it has been stressful and difficult with a lot of extra work, that we needed those two days as planning days. It will give us a chance to clean, and do whatever reorganization that we need to do based on how many kids are going to stay in virtual, or going to come back.”

Oldham says it is really important for the virtual students, and their parents and guardians, to let the School System know of their decision as soon as possible and not wait for the final date of September 9th.
