Stephens County Junior Rimfire Competitors Take Top Spots in State Meet

In the State Match this past weekend, Stephens County’s Junior Division team notched the top slots, with Haley Zigan claiming first place and Lizzie Lane taking 2nd, shooting against 32 other shooters, including six seniors from Stephens County.

This past weekend, the Stephens County  4-H .22 Rimfire Rifle Team traveled to the Rock Eagle ​​4-H Center in Eatonton to take part in the state Silhouette Match.

Georgia 4-H Project SAFE uses the shooting sports to teach many valuable life skills. Project SAFE (Shooting Awareness, Fun and Education) provides youth a place to develop a sense of belonging, learn teamwork in a safe environment and increase concentration skills.  Safety and the responsible use of firearms is a primary goal. 

Project SAFE 4-H shooting teams and clubs in Georgia, active in more than 110 of the 159 counties in the state, operate on a progression, introducing fourth through sixth graders to BB guns and high school students compete with .22 rifles. Seventh through ninth graders are introduced to air rifles or .22s. The Stephens County .22 Rimfire team includes shooters from seventh grade and up. 

In a silhouette competition, competitors have two and a half minutes to knock down clusters of metal silhouettes of chickens, pigs, turkeys and rams.  

In the State Match this past weekend, Stephens County’s Junior Division team notched the top slots, with Haley Zigan claiming first place and Lizzie Lane taking 2nd, shooting against 32 other shooters, including six seniors from Stephens County.

The team has a local match at the Georgia Mountain Shooting Association Range on April 13 and a State .22 rimfire match May 5, and on May 11, the team will be participating in the Cops VS Kids match charity event against local law enforcement at the Stephens County Sheriff Training Range, with Senator Bo Hatchett attending.
