Stephens County Expected to Get a “Light Dusting” of Snow Tuesday

Don’t expect scenes like this on Tuesday, but we may see a light dusting

Don’t rush out for milk and bread just yet.  The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg is not expecting Stephens County to get much of the snow that will be moving through Tuesday.

A fast-moving storm system will blow through our area Tuesday bringing with it the chance for some snow flurries in the afternoon.

While the metro Atlanta area and the mountains of North Georgia will see up to three inches of snowfall Tuesday, the Stephens/Franklin/Hart County area is expected to have mainly rain.

Meteorologist Justin Lane with the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg says temperatures will gradually fall Tuesday bringing the chance for some snow flurries or a wintry mix.

“Before the precipitation ends early in the afternoon, there’s going to be very cold arctic air pushing in behind the cold front that’s responsible for the preciptiation, and it’s going to be moving very fast, probably before the moisture clears the area. That’s why we’re expecting a transition to snow,” he explained. “But again, that’s expected to be very brief. We’re not expecting to see any accumulation. Maybe a dusting on grass mainly across  northern Stephens Counnty near the mountains. But that would be about the extent of it for Stephens and Franklin counties.”

Tuesday’s high of 45 will happen by late morning but then temperatures will drop into the low to mid 30’s.

So if any snow falls in Stephens or Franklin counties it will be this afternoon.

“Like I said it will be in the 30’s by mid-afternoon. So that’s why there will be a very brief window where we could see a transition to snow before the precipitation ends,” he said.

Meantime, the only school to announce closings in our area is North Georgia Tech at all three campuses.

Also the Toccoa Social Security office and the Toccoa Career Center will be closed Tuesday.

On Monday, Governor Brian Kemp announced all state offices would be closed Tuesday.

WNEG will continue to monitor the weather and bring you the latest in school and business closings as they come in.
