Stephens County Boys Pick Up Big Pre-Region Wins

The Stephens County Indians earned two wins on the road this past weekend to take some momentum into Region-8 play.

On Friday, the Indians trailed Elbert County by as many as 10 points but made winning plays late to take a 51-47 win.

The Indians trailed by three with just over a minute to play but a Zykemian Durham steal and 3-point play tied the game. After Elbert County scored to go back up three, a Javin Gordon 3-pointer and Nuri Winters bucket gave the Indians the lead for good.

Winters led the Indians with 17 points and Gordon added 11.

DK Winn led three Elbert County players in double figures with 12 points.

On Saturday, the Indians and the Rabun County Wildcats were tied after the first quarter but the Indians allowed only 3 points to the Wildcats in the second quarter and rolled to a 65-55 victory.  The Indians held off Rabun County in the fourth quarter by making 12 out of 14 free throws for a total of 18 out of 22 for the game.

Stephens County was led by Durham with 15 points, Gordon had 14, and Winters and Jasec Smith each had 13. The Indians defense held Rabun County’s Huey Blalock to just 2 points after he scored 39 against the Indians last Tuesday night.  Jack Hood led Rabun County with 19 points.

Stephens County improves to 6-7 on the season. Rabun County drops to 5-11.

Things did not go as well for the Lady Indians.

On Friday, Elbert County led by 11 points at the half and outscored the Lady Indians 28-10 in the 3rd quarter to take a 68-39 victory.

Audrey Lunsford led three Elbert County players with 17 points. Aleria Faulkner led the Lady Indians with 12 points.

On Saturday, Rabun County quickly went up 10-0 to start the game, but Stephens County scored the next 8 points to cut the lead down to 2.  The Lady Indians trailed by 9 at halftime, but was again able to come back and trailed by only 1 early in the third quarter but it was all Lady Cats from that point on and they went on to a 61-42 win.

 Stephens County was led by Faulkner with 10 points. Lucy Hood led Rabun County with 27.

 The Lady Indians drop to 2-12 on the season. Rabun County improves to 12-4.

The Indians and Lady Indians will open region play this Tuesday night as they host Franklin County at The Currahee Arena.  Varsity girls will tip-off at 6 P.M.and airtime on WNEG will be at 5:45 P.M.
