Stephens County BOE approves July Spending Resolution

The Stephens County Board of Education has put in place a spending resolution for the month of July.

On Tuesday, the school board approved a July Spending resolution.

Stephens County School Superintendent Bryan Dorsey says a monthly spending resolution allows the school system to operate and spend funds on a monthly basis until an official budget is approved and in place for the fiscal year.

The current fiscal year will end June 30; but, fiscal year 2020 will start July 1, and the school board has yet to adopt its official budget for the upcoming year.

The BOE is expected to consider adoption of the budget for fiscal year 2020 at its regular scheduled meeting Tuesday, July 16, following a second public hearing held during the same meeting.

The first public hearing will be held during the BOE’s work-session scheduled for July 11.

Under monthly spending resolutions, the school system is permitted to spend up to one-twelfth of the amount of the final amended budget for the previous fiscal year that ended on June 30.

In years past, the school board has used monthly spending resolutions until an official budget was approved, which Dorsey says is normal.
