Stephens County Board of Commissioners to discuss voting locations at called meeting next week

The Stephens County Board of Commissioners has announced that they will hold a called meeting of the Board next Wednesday, October 18, at 6 p.m. in the Stephens County Annex/Administration Building, located at 802 E. Doyle Street in Toccoa.

The only item listed on the agenda for the called meeting is “Discussion on County Properties and Future Elections Office.”

As reported by WNEG News in September of 2022, the Stephens County government purchased the former Tabor Motor Company building to be the future location of the Stephens County Election Office. The county paid $350,000 for the South Pond Street building. County officials, at the time, told WNEG News that once renovations to the building were completed, the county planned to use the new location for all future elections—including both advance voting and election day voting.

Discussions earlier this year between WNEG News and county officials suggested that the county no longer planned to move the Elections Office and voting to the Pond Street building, but an official decision had been made.

Likewise, also in 2022, the County purchased property at 36 Mize Road – the location of the former Casey’s Pro Tire. The County paid $450,000 for the 1.09 acres, the two auto shop buildings, including equipment, and an office building on the property. County officials told WNEG News that the proposed use of the property was to house the County’s fleet of vehicles and relocate the fleet maintenance shop, with talk of the facility also serving as a home to the county’s Search and Rescue unit.

Similar discussions earlier this year between WNEG News and county officials indicated that the plan to relocate the county’s fleet and maintenance operation to the Mize Road property had been abandoned.
