Stephens Co. Sheriff’s Office Arrests Henderson on Burglary Charge

Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley reports the arrest of a suspect involved in a burglary.

According to Shirley, the report of a burglary in process came in around 12 a.m. on June 26.

Shirley said that the homeowner was armed.

“911 Dispatch alerted deputies that the homeowner was armed with a shotgun and attempted to confront the suspect,” said Shirley. “During the encounter, the homeowner fired several shots, striking the suspect’s truck multiple times.”

After the shots were fired, the suspect accelerated, backing into a ditch and then ran into a heavily wooded area.

Deputies secured the scene and contacted the Georgia Department of Corrections K9 tracking team along with the Georgia State Patrol’s helicopter to help track the suspect.

Shirley said despite the investigative team staying out all night looking for the suspect, he was able to evade capture at that time, however, later that night an arrest was made.

“The investigators continued to work on the case throughout the day,” said Shirley. “At 10 o’ clock that same night, they were able to make an arrest on Sunset Road in Stephens County. They were able to arrest Elijah Henderson, 24 of Toccoa.”

Deputies also obtained a search warrant for Henderson’s residence and found items that were taken from previous burglaries on Pulliam Road.

Shirley said they’re expecting more charges in this investigation as it is ongoing.
