Stephens Co. Commission Approves Road Work

Stephens County Commissioners approve a road work list for the upcoming season.

Tuesday, Stephens County Administrator Phyllis Ayers presented a recommended list to the commission for its consideration.

Ayers said that list was created by looking at how the county staff had rated all of the roads using its system in place, then presenting recommendations to the county’s Roads and Bridges Committee, which Commissioners Debbie Whitlock and Dennis Bell sit on.

She said one group of roads recommended for work this year will be paid for with state road money funded by the Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant, or LMIG, program.

“What we will do with the LMIG money is Ridgeland Road, Wolf Pit Road, Yonah Dam Road and Yonah Lake Road,” said Ayers. “That will be the topping on those roads.”

The second group of roads that commissioners considered would be paid for with SPLOST VI funds.

According to Ayers, the county expects to spend $1 to $1.5 million in SPLOST money this year on roads.

She said that should get about seven roads completed, depending on cost, and she presented commissioners with a priority list.

Those roads are in order: Nub Garland Road, North Red Rock Road, South Red Rock Road, Lake Louise Road, Oak Valley Road, Rock Quarry Circle, and Davis Road.

Ayers said a lot of factors go in to creating this list.

“We use traffic flow and how many people are on the road,” said Ayers. “It is a major connector street?”

Stephens County Commissioners approved those two recommended lists unanimously.

Ayers said the goal is to get started as soon as possible this paving season.
