Stephens Co. Beats Bulldogs, Start Season 2-0

Stephens County comes from behind in the fourth quarter to pick up a second straight road win to start the 2018 football season.

Down 7-0 entering the fourth quarter, the Indians scored 10 points in the final 12 minutes to beat the Hart County Bulldogs, 10-7, in Hartwell.

The winning points came with just over a minute left on a 30-yard field goal by Stephens County kicker David Jimenez.

“It was a great job by both sides of the ball in the fourth quarter,” said Head Coach Wesley Tankersley. “Also, it was a great job by David Jimenez, the kicker, Walker Herron on the snap and Kenny Colwell on the hold for the field goal. It is David’s first year kicking, and we are very, very proud of him.”

The teams were scoreless at halftime.

However, Hart County struck first in the third quarter on a one-yard touchdown run by Malachi Thomas to make it 7-0, Bulldogs.

That is the way it stayed until early in the fourth quarter, when Kenny Colwell connected with Gamarion Carter on a 50-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 7.

Hart County drove down the field, but could not score after fumbling a snap on a short field goal attempt.

Stephens County answered that with a drive culminating in Jimenez’s game-winning field goal. The Indian defense held Hart County one final time to seal the win.

With the win, the Indians move to 2-0 on the season. Hart County falls to 0-2.

This coming week, Stephens County will host Athens Academy at the Reservation. Kick-off Friday night is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. with coverage starting at 5:30 p.m. with the Indian Tailgate Show on WNEG.
