State DOT hesitant to commit funds for W. Currahee Street Slope Stabilization

The State Department of Transportation has decided not to provide funding, at this time, to repair the slope on W. Currahee Street at Dicks Hill Parkway.

Phyllis Ayers is the county administrator for Stephens County.

Ayers tells WNEG News about the recent development.

“On Dicks Hill Parkway, the State DOT is not ready to commit any funds to it right now,” Ayers said. “But they are going to send their engineer to take a look at it. And they have a copy of both bid documents. We’re just going to keep pushing.”

As previously reported, in December of 2017, the Stephens County Board of Commissioners made the decision to immediately close a portion of W. Currahee Street, formerly Dick’s Hill Parkway, to all traffic near 4989 W. Currahee Street.

This portion of road was closed due to the safety of drivers being compromised.

Because of the complexity of the project, the county was unable to complete it in house; which created greater challenges and slowed the process down.

During a special called meeting, April 13, the commissioners voted and approved a motion awarding Hayword Baker Incorporated a $2.1 million contract to complete the repairs on W. Currahee Street; however, the award is dependent on and will only be distributed if the county receives funding from the state of Georgia.

With the State DOT deciding not to commit any funds at this time, the County will revisit the issue at a later date.

WNEG News will provide continued coverage on this developing story as more information becomes available.
