St. Pius Sweeps Varsity Indians

It was a case of deja vu for the Stephens County Indians.

Back in December at the Currahee Arena, St. Pius jumped out to a huge lead early and never trailed on their way to a 14 point victory over the Indians.

On Friday night, St Pius outscored Stephens County 19-8 in the first quarter and led throughout the contest defeating the Indians 71-56 in Atlanta.

Stephens County battled in the game pulling as close as five in the third quarter, but the Golden Lions opened the lead to as much as 21 in the 4th quarter and cruised to the victory.

Stephens County was led by Deundra Singleton with 21 points, 16 of those in the first half. Ty Nails added 14 points, and Montavis Thornton was also in double figures with 10.

St. Pius was led by Kennedy Willis with 17 points.

With the loss, the Indians fall to 2-3 in Region 8 play and 14-6 overall. St Pius, currently ranked #2 in the state AAAA polls, improves to 5-0 in the region, and 17-2 overall.

In the girls contest, St. Pius scored the first 11 points to roll to a 63-44 win. Tynajiah Eades led the Lady Indians with 12 points. St. Pius was led by Katheryn McKenzie’s 15 points.

The Lady Indians are now 2-3 in Region 8 play, and 10-10 overall after a non-region win over Towns County, 50-45, on Saturday night. St. Pius improves to 4-1 in the region and 11-7 overall.

The Stephens County Lady Indians JV team defeated the St.Pius JV’s earlier in the evening 43-36.

Both Stephens County varsity teams will be in action Monday night when they travel to face Jefferson in a make-up game originally scheduled for last week. Airtime on WNEG Monday night is set for 5:45 P.M.
