South Carolina’s Tax-Free Holiday Weekend Starts Today

It was announced earlier this year that Georgia would not have tax-free weekends this year.

In past years, the back to school tax free weekend was the last weekend of July and allowed parents and teachers to save money while buying back to school items.

Despite the missed opportunity for Georgia residents, South Carolina is still participating in a tax-free holiday weekend.

For anyone in the Northeast Georgia region who plans to travel to South Carolina to participate in their tax-free weekend, it began yesterday and runs through tomorrow.

According to the South Carolina Department of Revenue, a variety of school supplies items are exempt from the 6 percent sales tax and any applicable local taxes.

In years past, shoppers have saved between 2 and 3 million dollars during this holiday weekend, according to the South Carolina Department of Revenue’s website.

Shoppers will also pay no sales tax on items such as clothing, shoes, bookbags and computers.

However, there are some items that aren’t included in the tax free opportunity. For a list of the exempt and non-exempt items, visit dor.sc.gov.
