Slope remediation at Dicks Hill Parkway to start after Thanksgiving

The slope stabilization project at Dicks Hill Parkway will soon be underway, as long as the weather permits.

That’s according to Stephens County Administrator Phyllis Ayers.

She says that the equipment is slated to be mobilized on site following Thanksgiving.

“If the weather allows, they should start mobilizing their equipment after Thanksgiving. But, the forecast is calling for rain on Saturday. Pretty soon you’ll start to see the equipment come in,” Ayers said.

On Monday, a Pre-construction Conference was held to determine when Hayward Baker Incorporated would begin repairing the slope.

In December of 2017, the Stephens County Board of Commissioners made the decision to immediately close a portion of West Currahee Street, formerly Dicks Hill Parkway, to all traffic near 4989 W. Currahee Street.

At the time, the commission attributed their decision to close the road to the safety of motorist being compromised.

Because of the complexity of the project, the county was unable to complete the slope stabilization in house; which created greater challenges and halted the progress.

In April, the commission awarded a bid to Hayward Baker Incorporated for the design build to repair the slope in the amount of $2.1 million, dependent on the funding from the State of Georgia.

In June, Stephens County was awarded $800,000 from the Department of Transportation to fund a portion of the project.

Then, in September, the commissioners let the contract with Hayward Baker Inc. and since then, Hayward Baker Inc. have been working on the completion of several prerequisites before they could begin construction.

Once started, the project is anticipated to take approximately 180 days to complete.
