Sheriff Offers Holiday Shopping Safety Tips
With the holiday shopping season in full swing, the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office is offering some tips to try to ensure this season is a safe one.
First, Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley said people to need to drive safely when heading to stores and malls this Christmas season.
He reminded drivers to buckle up when driving, carry a cell phone and make sure it is charged, and make sure there is plenty of gas in the vehicle.
Shirley said once someone arrives at their destination, they need to stay alert to what is around them.
“Be on the lookout for anybody that looks suspicious,” said Shirley. “Avoid wearing expensive jewelry and I would encourage folks, especially females, not to carry a large purse. That just sticks out as something they can grab.”
Instead, he said people should carry their wallet in a pants pocket.
Shirley also encouraged residents to be careful in parking lots at large retail stores.
“Make sure you get in a well-lit area if it at night and I would not travel alone,” said Shirley. “When you get out of your car, make sure your remote is still in your hand. If anything were to happen, you could activate your car alarm.”
The sheriff said once parked, people should lock their vehicle and move quickly and confidently to the store and stay aware while walking into the store.
He said people should not search for things in their purse or bags in the parking lot, but instead wait until they are in the store to do so.
Meanwhile, Shirley said shoppers need to also exercise caution when leaving the store.
“Put that remote in your hand before you exit the building just in case were to happen,” said Shirley.
He also reminded people to make sure gifts are hidden inside of the truck.
The sheriff also said people should not hesitate to ask a store employee for help in leaving a store late.
He said keeping these things in mind can reduce the chances of someone becoming a victim of would-be thieves or robbers.
